Good morning, lakeshore. Mona Shores and Byron Center have played four times in the last three years, and every one of those games has ended with a late interception. Byron Center was on the right end of two of the first three. Friday at Sailor Stadium, JC Tornes tipped a Brady Hartson pass with 54 seconds left, Messiah Himes came down with it, and the Sailors held on 29-28. That was after Braylon Facchini hit the go-ahead extra point, which came after Byron Center had already blocked two of them.

In this today’s Lowdown:

  • Muskegon's dead tell their own stories this weekend

  • Week 6 football finals

  • The boat that started Grand Haven

Let’s get into it.

PLOT TWISTS

City of the Dead rises at Evergreen 👻

Once a year, Muskegon's oldest city-owned cemetery gets a cast. City of the Dead puts actors in period clothes at the graves in Evergreen Cemetery. Each one plays the person buried there and tells that person's story.

It started in 2010, when Harbor Unitarian Universalist Congregation needed a fun way to fund its religious education program. It kept growing, and now it pulls in visitors from out of town too.

Guides walk small groups through the Victorian garden cemetery and stop at headstones where Muskegon's past is waiting to say hello. Some of the characters are famous. Plenty aren't, and those tend to be the good ones.

Pick your mood. Saturday runs 5 to 8 PM, and the later groups finish in the dark. Sunday runs 2 to 4 PM if you'd rather meet the dead in daylight. It's rain or shine, so dress for October.

FERRY TALE

🌟Only in Muskegon and Grand Haven

On November 2, 1834, Reverend William M. Ferry arrived by boat from Mackinac Island with about 20 people, his family among them. A fur trader named Rix Robinson had already opened a trading post nearby in 1821, close to where the Tri-Cities Historical Museum stands today. Ferry's small group grew into Grand Haven. The museum now fills the old Grand Trunk depot, built in 1870, along with the Akeley Building on Washington Ave, and admission is still free. Walk in sometime and see how far 20 people got.

Thanks for reading. If Mona Shores and Muskegon keep the streak going, don't leave Hackley early, because it may come down to the last pass. See you Friday.
