Tuesday's shaping up nice, mid-70s with a good deal of sunshine and a light northwest breeze. Wednesday and Thursday hold in that same mid-to-upper 70s range before Friday and the weekend push toward the upper 70s and even 80.

Lake conditions are calm right now. Water's sitting somewhere in the mid-60s to low-70s depending on the source, waves are running small at a foot or two, and winds stay light out of the northwest most of the week.

The verdict: Genuinely easy week for the beach, no real catches.

7 Day Glance: Warm and mostly sunny straight through the weekend, with maybe a stray shower sneaking in one afternoon but nothing that should mess with plans. Temps climb as the week goes, so the back half is your best shot at peak late-summer conditions before Burning Foot weekend arrives.

Tuesday morning brings two easy options in Muskegon before the week gets going. The Western Market runs its regular Tuesday hours starting at 8 AM downtown, and the City's free Walking Club meets at 11 AM, rotating between Hackley Park, Marsh Field, and Beachwood Park each week for a change of scenery. Both are the kind of low-key, come-as-you-are events that are easy to skip and worth not skipping.

Wednesday is the bigger one on the Grand Haven side, with Music on the Grand closing out its August run at Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium, and the Farmers Market running its usual hours at its new Mulligan's Hollow spot, more on that above.

And if you're the planning type, Saturday is Burning Foot's debut at Heritage Landing, so this is your heads-up to clear the calendar if you haven't already.

The Deck has a genuinely packed week lined up right on the sand in Muskegon. Brena takes the stage tonight, a six-piece outfit that covers a lot of ground. Wednesday brings another full band, then Thursday pairs free face painting for the kids with a set from Sonimanic, an up-and-coming power pop act out of Grand Rapids. Friday closes it out with Union Guns bringing high-energy country to get the dance floor moving, starting a bit later at 7 PM. Most other sets start around 6, so it's worth a quick glance at their socials before heading down.

Wednesday belongs to Grand Haven too, with Music on the Grand's season finale bringing the Johnny Park Band to the waterfront stadium starting at 6:30. If you've been meaning to catch a show all summer, this is the last call before next year.

Conditions are about as good as it gets right now. Water temp's holding in the mid-to-upper 60s, waves are small, and winds stay light most of the week, which makes for easy going whether you're paddleboarding, sailing, or just floating around Muskegon Lake without much of a plan. Kayakers should have smooth water too, especially early mornings before any afternoon breeze picks up.

For the anglers: Steady water temps mean decent action on perch and bass in the channel areas, especially early morning or right around sunset when things cool off a touch.

Most of the lakeshore's attention this week is aimed at Saturday, but the regular rotation is still worth knowing. If you're downtown Grand Haven after Music on the Grand wraps up Wednesday, the Washington Ave strip is an easy walk for a nightcap, plenty of spots within a couple blocks of the waterfront stadium.

On the Muskegon side, The Deck's happy hour is a solid way to start an evening before the sun goes down, smoked BBQ and a view that does most of the work for you.

Varsity football season is finally here, and it's landing on different nights depending who you follow. Mona Shores opens things up early, at St. Mary Preparatory this Thursday, August 27.

Muskegon bucks that trend slightly, with the Big Reds opening Friday, August 28 on the home against Grandville, a rematch of last year's 44-40 shootout that came down to the final drive. Grand Haven's Buccaneers also have their opener on the calendar this week, looking to build on last year's late-season progress under second-year head coach Andrew Biedenbender.

Elsewhere around the county, keep an eye out for Reeths-Puffer, Oakridge, Fruitport, North Muskegon, and the Whitehall-Montague corner of things too, all of them kicking off within the same stretch of nights. Varsity soccer is already a few matches into its season on both sides, with Muskegon hosting Jenison midweek and Oakridge coming off a tie against Kent City.

Fillanthropie started as a 150-square-foot chalet at the Western Market, and less than a year later it's a full storefront on Clay Ave, which tells you most of what you need to know about how fast this one caught on. Owner Tarah Rhenae opened Muskegon's first zero-waste refillery with a simple pitch: bring your own bottle, refill what you actually need, skip the plastic.

The shop's grown into more than just soap and detergent since the move, now stocking Michigan-made, women-owned, and minority-owned goods alongside the refill stations. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow browse, and it's proof that a good idea tested small can outgrow its own chalet fast.

Right in front of the old Board of Education building downtown stands the oldest statue of a U.S. president most people walk past without a second glance. It's William McKinley, sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus, and lumber baron Charles Hackley commissioned it almost immediately after McKinley's assassination in 1901, making it the earliest McKinley memorial statue anywhere in the country.

There's no velvet rope around it, no plaque demanding a selfie, just a president standing quietly on a downtown corner, older than the building he's guarding and older than the memory of most people who pass him every day. Muskegon has a habit of being first at things nobody expects it to be first at. This is one of the good ones.
