Saturday splits attention between Heritage Landing, where Burning Foot takes over downtown Muskegon, and Grand Haven's beach and downtown strip.

Either way, this is the last full weekend before Labor Day starts pulling summer's plug.

The Flight Deck above Early Owl has its usual outdoor lineup this week too, weather-dependent as always. On the Grand Haven side, downtown's Washington Ave strip stays a reliable bet for something live most weekend nights.

Burning Foot's 11th year is officially off the beach, and tomorrow is the first test at its new home, Heritage Landing. Parking has moved too, now at The Mart Dock just northeast of the grounds, not the old beach lots. Gates open at 3 PM, early entry at 2 for Sandbox VIP and Guild Enthusiast Members, and the party runs to 10. Bring an empty vessel if you want to carry one in, Camelbacks included, no exceptions.

Closer to tonight, Socibowl downtown at 441 W Western is still a solid call for duckpin bowling and the Muskegon Melt burger. On the Grand Haven side, Melli's Deli on Washington Ave has quietly become one of the east side's better lunch stops, more on that below.

Ravenna opens tonight at Beal City under new head coach Steve Czerwon, who won four state championships in a previous stint at Muskegon Catholic. Varsity soccer is already a few weeks into its season on both sides of the county.

Melli's Deli opened back in January on Grand Haven's east side, in Washington Square across from Frank's Market. Owner Owen Mulcahy grew up visiting the East Coast and wanted to bring that specific sandwich-shop-and-bodega feel back with him, the kind of place where a Reuben comes stacked half a pound high and the tiramisu is made in-house.

The menu leans Italian-American, hero sandwiches, hot subs, and a New York City hot dog cart alongside homemade cannoli.

Michigan has more female lighthouse keepers in its history than any other state, and Muskegon has its own entry in that record. In 1858, keeper William Monroe passed away, and rather than replace him, the job went to his widow, Jemima Monroe. She kept the light running for ten years while raising her children alone, making her the only woman to ever hold the post at Muskegon.

There's no marker retelling her decade of climbs up that tower, no plaque with her name on the pier today. Just a woman who did the job because it needed doing, long before anyone thought to ask if she could.
