NORA Kids Nights returns to downtown Grand Haven tonight, 6 to 8pm, a family-friendly evening built for the littlest lakeshore residents. Wednesday, Run Muskegon's weekly Wednesday meetup gets a bonus with a Food Truck Rally at the Pigeon Hill parking lot, 5 to 8pm, so grab dinner before or after the run whether you're lacing up or not.

Thursday night, Grand City Show Skiers puts on its themed "Secret Sip" show at Ross Park Beach, a Roaring 20s water ski performance that's free and family-friendly, pre-show at 6:30, main event at 7.

Calm and easy through Wednesday: waves under a foot, water in the mid to upper 70s, light winds. Good stretch for paddleboarding or an easy kayak session on either the harbor or the open lake. Thursday flips the script as north winds build waves to 1 to 3 feet, more of a day for the confident paddlers and less for a lazy float.

For the anglers: King salmon continue staging outside the channel as they push toward the rivers, and perch action on Muskegon Lake remains steady. Conditions are shifting week to week with this stretch of wind changes, so check with a local charter before planning a trip that depends on calm water.

Midweek deal worth building a night around: Legends Bar & Grill's Wine on Western runs every Wednesday, 4 to 9pm, a 9oz pour at the price of a 6oz alongside a small-plates menu that includes a charcuterie board and ahi tuna.

Over in Grand Haven, New Holland's Pinwheel Kitchen sits right next to the Grand Haven Tasting Room on Washington Ave, serving up the brewery's cult-favorite pepperoni pinwheels along with a rotating menu of dips and sides. No alcohol on site, but nothing's stopping you from grabbing a pinwheel and walking it next door.

Fall camp is underway across all 13 schools as of Monday, helmets-only for the first couple days per MHSAA heat guidelines before pads come on. Rosewood Provisions opened earlier this year in Grand Haven's Centertown, at 106 N. Seventh Street in what used to be a barber shop. Owner Margaux DeConcini built the place around one simple idea: bring your own container, refill it with shampoo, soap, cleaning supplies, or home goods, and only pay for what you use. It's a low-waste refillery in the truest sense, most products keep to four ingredients or fewer, and DeConcini makes a lot of what's on the shelves herself. Her line for the business says it plainly: a place where the community comes to refill. Worth a stop next time you're wandering Centertown.

Here's something worth sitting with. For decades, Muskegon Lake carried a label most people never think about: an EPA Area of Concern, one of the most polluted spots on the entire Great Lakes system, a legacy of a century of industrial runoff. It sat on that list since 1985. This year, after decades of cleanup work by people who mostly never got their names in the paper, the lake is being delisted. Gone. Cleared. On August 15, the community's marking it with a one-mile fun run at Grand Trunk, but the real story isn't the run, it's what it took to get here. A lake that used to be a cautionary tale is now the reason 20,000 people packed the shoreline for a festival two weeks ago. That's not nothing. That's the lakeshore actually healing, in real time, in our lifetime.
