Opening weekend is over, but Grand Haven isn't slowing down. This is the stretch of the festival locals actually love best: smaller crowds, cheaper parking, and a run of solid concerts. Tonight brings Kids Day downtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., then the carnival opens at 6 and the Main Stage hosts The Trifecta of American Classic Rock, a tribute night covering Steve Miller Band, John Cougar, and CCR, for $15. Wednesday is Senior Day and the festival's volleyball tournament, plus Forever Seger takes the Main Stage at 6:30. Thursday brings the Coastie Golf Tournament and a Coast Guard recruiting presentation in the morning, then Crazy Train, the Ozzy tribute, closes out the night for $20.

Ship Tours run daily this week if you want to walk a Coast Guard vessel deck for free. Parking downtown gets tight after 5 p.m., so budget extra time or bike in if you can. The big stuff, the Grand Parade, fireworks, and drone show, waits for Saturday. But if you want the festival without the elbow-to-elbow crowds, this is your window.

Today's a warm one, with highs near 81 and a low dropping into the upper 50s overnight. Rain chances sit low at 15 percent, and skies stay mostly sunny through the afternoon. The catch is the wind: it swings north and picks up hard as the day goes on, gusting toward gale force by early afternoon.

Lake Michigan is sitting around 70 degrees today, genuinely pleasant for a dip, but that's not going to matter much once the wind gets going. Marine forecasters are calling for waves building from 3 to 5 feet this morning up to 5 to 8 feet by afternoon along our stretch of shoreline, with a severe thunderstorm watch already posted for tonight.

The verdict: Skip the swim today. Piers and open water get genuinely dangerous once those north winds kick up, so save the beach day for tomorrow.

7 Day Glance: Wednesday calms back down with sun and waves easing to 1 to 3 feet, and Thursday is about as good as summer gets here, sunny with waves at a foot or less. Friday brings a slightly higher rain chance as festival week builds toward the weekend, and Saturday carries the best shot at showers with a 45 percent chance, though Sunday and Monday swing back to sunny and warm, with highs pushing into the mid-80s by Monday.

Kids Day takes over downtown Grand Haven today from 10 to 2, with games and activities built for the under-12 crowd. Wednesday is Senior Day in the morning, followed by the Coast Guard Festival Volleyball Tournament, a fun one to wander past if you've never seen it. The carnival runs every night this week from Harbor Front and the Covenant Life parking lot, with hours stretching later as the week goes on. And if you missed it, the Cruise-In Car Show and Flea on Seventh both packed downtown this weekend, so expect a few more classic cars parked around town for photos before owners head home.

Friday night is the pick of the week, and it's a two-venue split in Muskegon: Killer Flamingos, Detroit's high-energy party band, hits The Deck on the beach at 7 p.m., while Brian Fedewa plays the rooftop at The Flight Deck above The Early Owl on Western Ave from 7 to 10. Midweek, catch Dave Burel at Muskegon Brewing Company Wednesday from 6 to 9, or head to Grand Haven's Main Stage for Forever Seger, the Silver Bullet Experience, at 6:30 for $15. Today is a rough one out there. North winds building toward gale force this afternoon mean waves climbing to 5 to 8 feet along our shoreline, with a severe thunderstorm watch already posted for tonight. If you were planning to paddleboard or kayak today, push it to Wednesday instead, when things calm back down to 1 to 3 footers and sunshine takes over. Boaters should watch for a possible small craft advisory as this system moves through.

For the anglers: Guide reports out of the Muskegon Lake channel have been steady on kings and steelhead over the last week, with early morning trolling producing the best results before the wind picks up. Once today's system clears out, Wednesday and Thursday's calm water should be a solid window to get back out there.

Downtown Grand Haven is getting a new pizza-by-the-slice spot: The Slice Shoppe, a New York-style expansion from Lakeside Pizza Co., is set to open this summer just blocks from the festival action.

Over in Muskegon, Legends Bar & Grill runs Wine on Western every Wednesday from 4 to 9, a 9-ounce pour priced like a 6-ounce, paired with a small-plates menu that includes a charcuterie board and ahi tuna.

And if you haven't tried Lucky Bucket on Washington Avenue yet, the seafood street food spot has been drawing steady crowds since opening this spring, a solid grab-and-go option for festival week.

Prep sports are in their summer quiet stretch, but the Muskegon Clippers wrapped their season July 16 against the Michigan Monarchs, closing out a summer of Marsh Field baseball that included a Clippers Clobber Cancer Night and a Host Family Appreciation Night for the billet families who housed players all season. Thanks for a good year, guys.

If you're itching for organized competition this week, the Coast Guard Festival Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday is worth a walk-by, and fall sports open houses and conditioning are only a few weeks out.

If you haven't stopped into Gracie's Book Store on East Apple Avenue, you're missing one of Muskegon's best-kept secrets. Owner Cindy Thoma, who goes by Gracie to regulars, named the shop after her mom, her daughter, and her granddaughter, and her whole approach to the place reflects that family warmth. She built the store around a simple idea: everyone deserves access to a good book, whether they can afford one that day or not. Most of the inventory comes from community donations, and Cindy is known for sending people home with an armful even when their wallet says otherwise. It's a shop that runs on heart more than margin, and it shows the second you walk in.

Back in September 1961, a 23-year-old Coast Guardsman named David Sparks was on duty at the end of Grand Haven's south pier when the remnants of Hurricane Carla whipped up the lake. Two teenagers had walked out to watch the waves, and one got swept in. Sparks stripped down and dove into the churn to reach him, fighting the same kind of rough water we're watching roll in today. He earned the Coast Guard's Gold Lifesaving Medal for it. It's a quiet piece of history, but it is the whole reason this town calls itself Coast Guard City, USA, and it's worth remembering every time those waves pick up along our pier.
