Good morning, lakeshore. Crews started tearing down the Muskegon Mall in 2003. Not long after, the city started imagining a downtown that actually touched Muskegon Lake. Tonight you can walk the spot where itβs finally happening. From 5 to 6:30 PM, the city is hosting a walk-through at the Third Street Wharf, the 3.12-acre spot next to the Shoreline Inn thatβs becoming a public park. Theyβll have two concept plans on hand and want to hear from you before construction starts.
In this todayβs Lowdown:
Grand Havenβs skeletons get judged Saturday
Shores and the Bucs meet in soccer tonight
The ferry that never made it home
Letβs get into it.

NO BONES ABOUT IT
Grand Haven crowns its skeletons Saturday π
Since Oct. 1, more than 150 five-foot skeletons have been posted up in storefronts across Downtown and Centertown Grand Haven. Local businesses dressed every one of them, and youβve been voting in three categories: Most Original, Funniest and Spookiest.
Voting closes at noon Friday. On Saturday, Bones About Town wraps up with Fall Fest, a free morning downtown where the winners get revealed.
For the kids, the main event is trick-or-treating at the downtown storefronts from 10:30 AM to noon. Highs are in the upper 60s, so for once the costume doesnβt have to hide under a winter coat.
Grab a coffee, let the kids clean up on candy, then walk over to Centertown for the skeletons you missed. They come down after Saturday. Havenβt voted? Youβve got until noon Friday.

The verdict: Sixty-eight on Oct. 23 is not normal, so use it. Mornings start in the low 40s, so layer up for the bus stop and shed it by lunch. The lake stays flat all week, which makes it a good week to walk the pier.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
πOnly in Muskegon and Grand Haven
Ninety-seven years ago Thursday, the car ferry SS Milwaukee left its namesake city with a load of railroad cars, bound for its home dock in Grand Haven. A gale was already tearing up Lake Michigan, and the ferry had no radio. It never made it, and no one aboard survived. Days later, a Coast Guard surfman found the shipβs message case on the Michigan shore. Inside was a note from the purser, Richard Sadon of Grand Haven, saying the ship was taking on water fast and βthings look bad.β Divers didnβt find the wreck until 1972, upright in about 120 feet of water off Milwaukee. The ferry that replaced it, the City of Milwaukee, still sits docked in Manistee.

Thanks for reading. If you make it to the Third Street Wharf tonight, tell them where you want the kayak launch. The cityβs been working on this since the mall came down in 2003. See you Friday.
