BoDocks has Big Nick & The Rhythm Kings booked for Saturday night at 7, always a solid bet on the marina side of things. Grand Haven's New Holland Distilling Co. keeps its Friday night residency going too, live music and craft cocktails downtown from 7 to 10. And The Deck's usual near-nightly lineup on the sand carries through the weekend, worth a scroll through their socials for who's on tonight versus Saturday.

Today's front moves through fast, so if you're chasing that early salmon bite off the breakwalls, look for a window either before the rain rolls in or after it clears out tonight. Saturday through Monday is where the water really opens up, calm conditions and light wind making for an easy stretch to get the boat out, whether that's a sunset cruise on Muskegon Lake or a run out to open water.

For the anglers: Cooling water temps this time of year typically push salmon and steelhead closer to the piers, so pier fishing should only get better as the weekend goes on.

On the Grand Haven side, Off the Chain Brewstillery has quietly become one of the more interesting new stops in town, tucked inside Loose Spokes bike shop on Colfax Ave. Seven beers, wine, and seasonal cocktails, no kitchen of their own, but food trucks roll through on Tuesdays and you're welcome to bring in whatever you'd rather eat.

Speaking of which, volleyball did something no gym floor can match this week. The Steel Deck Showdown set up a full tournament on the deck of the USS LST 393, the WWII landing ship docked on Muskegon's waterfront, with Whitehall, Mona Shores, and Western Michigan Christian playing Tuesday and Fruitport, Reeths-Puffer, and North Muskegon playing Wednesday. Six teams, one battleship, zero normal home courts.

Rosewood Provisions opened this spring in Grand Haven's Centertown, in the old barber shop space at 106 N. 7th Street, built around a simple idea: bring your own container and refill it instead of buying new. Owner Margaux DeConcini, originally from Arizona, stocks the shelves with bulk personal care, cleaning, kitchen, and pet refills, plus a rotating lineup of local goods and community workshops. It's a low-waste shop that doesn't lecture you about it, just makes the sustainable option the easy one.

On October 28, 1919, the steamer City of Muskegon tried to make port during a 60 mile-per-hour gale and struck the pier, going down in a matter of minutes. Fifteen people died that night, nine crew and six passengers, in one of the fastest, most violent shipwrecks in Muskegon's harbor history. Lake Michigan holds more shipwrecks than any other Great Lake, and this one happened close enough to shore that people on land could see it unfold. Next time the water looks calm from the pier, remember it hasn't always been.
